    Have to say that I was very impressed with this animation. My 7 year old thinks that it is fantastic and actually sat through the following three lessons having told me to "go away"! SP, Castletown

    The animations, esp. the interactive ones, are fantastic as teaching tools.

    However, in the Voltage and Current section I came across the following statement:

    "The voltage on the positive (+) side is 6V and the voltage on the negative (-) side is 0V."

    Now, having correctly explained that Voltage is P.D, and that it only makes senst to speak of voltage (PD) between (or across) two points in a circuit, this is the equivalent of saying, "The Potential Difference on the positive side is 6V and ....."
    Taken to its logical conclusion, we're then talking of Potential Difference difference between the +ive and -ve sides, aren't we?

    Hi Pat. Thanks for this. I guess I make a distinction between what voltmeters measure - only difference and the idea of potential at a point, which is about moving positive charges from some references point (like the negative terminal of the battery) to the point you're interested in.

    Hi,
    Please can you let me know the mechanism involved in 'converting energy', which hopefully will explain why energy is converted in the relatively higher resistance component on a circuit e.g. the bulb rather than in the relatively lower resistance component e.g. the wire?
    If a 2nd bulb which is a higher resistance than the first is then added in series. the 1st bulb - effectively the middle resistor - converts energy more quickly than the 2nd. Why doesn't the the lowest resistor [the wire] just convert all the energy and heat up?

    There is a grammatical mistake in the "wrong idea is that charges travel fast." It says "In parallel circuits the charges don’t have to make up there mind what to do at junctions" but of course it should be THEIR mind. :)

    I have just subscribed to this website and have found it useful in supplementing my physics lessons. However, I find the explanation of voltage & p.d. a bit misleading. Using the 'red stuff' and black dots seems to imply that the charge carries this energy along in some way. How then do you explain potential difference across a bulb which is driven by ac current. Here there would be no net movement of charges as the charges would just be oscillating back and forth.
